Serotonergic Drugs Flashcards
Buspirone?
5HT1A agonist. Treats generalized anxiety disorder. May be used off label in conjunction with SSRI for major depression.
Sumatriptan?
5HT1D agonist. Used to treat migraines. The drug causes cerebral vasoconstriction and decrease inflammatory response to help end migraines.
Fluoxetine?
SSRI. Used to treat depression, OCD, or PTSD. Increases amount of 5HT at the synapse.
Sertraline?
SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). Used to treat depression, OCD, or PTSD. Increases amount of 5HT at the synapse.
Trazadone?
SARI (Serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor). Blocks 5HT2A/2C receptors to treat depression and anxiety while avoiding the negative side effects of SSRIs.
Risperidone?
5HT2A/2C + D2/3 antagonist. Used in the treatment of schizophrenia with psychosis. Decreases activation of the mesolimbic pathway.
Odansetron?
5HT3 receptor antagonist. Used in patients with chemotherapy-induced emesis.
Mosapride and Cisapride?
5HT4 receptor agonists not currently allowed for use in the US. Increase gut motility related to gastroparesis (slowing of gut motility).
