Is chloramphenicol used anymore? Where?
Not in the USA due to severe adverse effects. Only used in the developing world
Chloramphenicol
Mechanism of Action
Bind the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing peptide bond formation
Chloramphenicol
Cidal or Static?
Bacteriostatic for most.
Cidal against Haemophilus influenzae, strep pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis
Chloramphenicol
Mechanisms of Resistance
- Reduced permeability
- Ribosomal mutation
- Acetyltransferase inactivation
Chloramphenicol
Absorption
Well absorbed int he GI tract
Chloramphenicol
Distribution
