Dopaminergic Drugs Flashcards
L-DOPA?
Precursor of dopamine used to treat Parkinson’s Disease.
Carbidopa?
Inhibitor of DOPA decarboxylase (which converts LDOPA to dopamine) in the periphery. Allows more dopamine to reach the CNS. Prescribed in conjunction with LDOPA to allow more dopamine to reach the CNS.
Bromocriptine?
D2 agonist used to treat Parkinson’s Disease
Selegiline?
Blocks MAO-B isoform, which is the main isoform involved in dopamine metabolism. Used to treat Parkinson’s disease at low doses. Allows you to still eat tyramine.
Tolcapone?
Inhibits COMT (the main enzyme in dopamine metabolism). Used in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.
Haloperidol?
D2 antagonist used in acute psychosis, long term depot for poorly compliant schizophrenic patients.
Methylphenidate?
AKA Ritalin. Used in ADHD treatment. Causes increased dopamine release in the frontal cortex to improve attention.
Metaclopramide?
D2 antagonist with 5HT4 agonist properties. Used for chemotherapy induced and post op vomiting and nausea.
