Sepsis and Septic Shock Flashcards
Define systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).
Response of the body systemically
- infection could be in blood or tissue
- could be do to an infection
Criteria:
Any 2 of the following
-fever of more than 38 degrees (or less than 36)
- heart rate > 90
- respiratory rate >20 breaths more minute
- abnormal WBS >12000/ul
- bands (immature neutrophil)
What is normal WBC?
4,000 - 10,000 / cmm
What is a band cell?
- immature neutrophil
- band cells increase in blood when need for neutrophils exceeds bone marrow’s ability to produce them
What is the acute phase response?
Release of various proteins from liver in response to stimulation with IL-6 and other pro-inflammatory cytokines
What is sepsis?
SIRS due to a documented infection
What is severe sepsis?
sepsis with organ dysfunction
ex) elevated BUN, createnine, urinary problems
nonresponsive - organ dysfunction
What is septic shock?
infection-induced Hypotension and cannot be reversed with IV fluid
What is disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)?
systemic activation of clotting system followed by depletion of clotting factors and subsequent systemic hemorrhage
What is multiorgan dysfunction syndrome?
varying degrees of organ impairment secondary to SIRS
What is compensatory anti-inflammatory response syndrome (CARS)?
unregulated anti-inflammatory response leading to immune suppression & increased risk of infection
