Sepsis Flashcards
what is the definition of sepsis?
life threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection
what is septic shock?
subset of sepsis: underlying circulatory and cellular/metabolic abnormalities are profound enough to substantially increase mortality
which inflammatory mediators are released?
toll-like receptors
NF-kB
cytokines
how can you confirm sepsis?
cytology
if there are bacteria on cytology, is the patient septic?
not necessarily
what commonly causes canine sepsis?
septic peritonitis
pneumonia
what can cause feline sepsis?
neoplasia
pyothorax
septic peritonitis
pyelonephritis
wound infections
pneumonia
what cytokines are released in sepsis?
TNF
IL-1
IL-6
what does LPS from gram-negative bacteria bind to?
LPS binding protein
what is the primary component of gram-positive cell wall?
lipoteichoic acid
why is there reduced vessel tone with sepsis?
hyporesponsiveness: nitric oxide
relative corticosteroid deficiency
reduced effective circulating volume
why do microthrombi form?
consumption of endogenous anticoagulants
suppression of fibrinolysis
mild thrombocytopenia
what are colloids?
large molecules that do not move freely out of the intravascular space
