What is the definition of systemic inflammatory response syndrome?
A
- 2 or more of the following
- Temp over 38 or under 36,
- Heart rate over 90
- Respiratory rate over 20
- WCC over 12,000 or under 4000

What is the definition of the following:
- Sepsis
- Severe sepsis,
- Septic shock
A
- Sepsis: SIRS and presumed infection.
- Severe sepsis: Sepsis plus evidence of organ dysfunction. (definition to give in exams)
- Septic shock: Severe sepsis with hypotension or lactic acidosis.

What is the clinical presentation of sepsis?
A
- Fever, breathlessness, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea.
- Tachycardia, hypotension, pyrexia, peripheral vasodilation, hypoxia, tachypnoea.

What is the sepsis 6?
A
BUFALO
- Take bloods and culture,
- Measure lactate
- Administer oxygen,
- Administer IV antibiotics
- Administer IV fluids,
- Monitor urine output

What is the treatment for meningitis?
A
- Ceftriaxone as it has good CNS penetration and active against gram negatives

What is the qSOFA score?
A
Patient gets 1 point for each of the following:
- Altered mental status
- resp rate over 22
- Systolic blood pressure under 100mmhg
