Chest X Ray Flashcards
What is the veil sign?
Hazyness of the left upper lobe of the lung which suggests collapse
What does this CXR show and explain the signs
Left upper lobe collapse. It has the veil sign and there is loss of the left heart boarder.
If it was left lower lobe then the diaphragm would not be visable.
What does this CXR show and explain the signs
Left lower lobe collapse. Presence of the sail sign (the increased opacification behind the heart shadow due to the collapse - two colours) and you cannot follow the left hemidiaphragm all the way to the spine. Sometimes the left hemidiaphragm will not be viable at all.
Left HB is still visable so not LUL collapse
What does this CXR show and explain the signs
Right lower lobe collapse.
Cannot see the right hemidiaphragm. There is a triangular opacification/ However right heart boarder is still visable as this is in contact with the right middle lobe.
What does the CXR show and explain the signs
Right middle lobe collapse. Because there is loss of right heart boarder. However can still see the right hemidiaphragm so the lower lobe is intact
What does the CXR show and explain the signs
Right upper lobe collapse. There is elevation of the horizontal fissure due to a loss of volume in the upper lobe. Increased opacification of the RUL
How many ribs should be present anteriorly in a well inspired CXR?
6
What does the CXR show and explain the signs
Tension pneumothorax. Loss of lung markings, lung feild is much darker, you can see the shrivled up lung.
Tracheal deviation and mediastial shift indicated it is a tension pneumothorax
What does the CXR show and explain the signs
Pneumoperitoneum. Free air under the right hemidiaphragm. This is caused by perforated hollow viscus
