Signs and symptoms of sepsis

A

Look for red flags & NEWS2 score above 5+.
Fever
History of infection (pneumonia/UTI/abdo pain or distention/wounds/cellulitis/meningitis

Risk factors for sepsis

A
Infants or over 75 or frail
Impaired immune systems (cancer/diabetes)
No spleen
Sickle cell
Immunosuppressants
Recent surgery
IV drug use
Pregnancy

Management of sepsis

A

Hi flow O2 (94-98%, or 88-92%)
BP<90/65 - fluids
Pre alert hospital

What is septic shock?

A

A subset of sepsis causing profound circulatory, cellular and metabolic abnormalities. Hard to determine pre hospital so fluid resuscitation should be carried out if the patient is hypotensive.
