What is cauda equina?
A
Caused by depression of the cauda equina (the nerves that leave the lower portion of the spinal cord to reach lower parts of the body - eg bladder and legs).

Signs and symptoms of cauda equina
A
Back pain with associated weakness, numbness and loss of power or control
Bladder and bowel incontinence (with or without realising)
Sciatica and leg weakness
Saddle numbness
Sexual problems

Management of cauda equina
A
MRI
Surgery within 24/48 hours of onset depending on severity
Pain relief from us
No need to immobilise unless trauma present

A
Vertebral disc herniation, lower back surgery, or tumours in lumbar spine
