Separating Mixtures Flashcards
What did mixtures consist of
Two or more elements not chemically combined
What can the components of a mixture retain
There own properties e.g. in the mixture of iron and sulfur the iron is still magnetic and the sulfur is yellow
What can mixtures be separated by
Physical processes, these processes do not involve chemical reactions so no new substances are made
What is filtratikn
Filtration is used to separate soluble solids from insoluble solids e.g. a mixture of a salt which is soluble and sand which is insoluble can be separated by dissolving the salt in water and obtaining the sand
What is crystaloisation
Crystaloisation is used to obtain a soluble solid from a solutions.e. salt crystals can be obtained from salty water by heating the water untill the water evaporates and crystals are left
What is simple distillation used to do
Obtain a solvent from a solution
What is fractional distillation used to do
Separate mixtures that have different boiling points
What is chromatography used to do
Seperate different soluble, coloured components of a mixture,e.g.the different colours added to a fizzy drink can be separated by chrimatography
