Quantitative Chemistry R Flashcards
what is the total mass of products equal to in conservation of mass?
the total mass of reactants
why is mass conserved in the conservation of mass experiment?
because no atoms are lost or made
how do you show conservation of mass in chemical equations?
chemical symbol equations are always balanced to show this i.e. there must be the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation
what is an example of conservation of mass?
when solid iron reacts with copper (2) producing solid copper and iron(3) sulfate solution
what can a half equation be used to show?
it can be used to show what happens to one reactant in a chemical reaction with electrons written as E^-
What can ionic equations be used to do?
They can be used to simplify complicated equations as they just show species involved with the reactions
what is the relative formula mass?
the relative formula mass of a compound is the summ of all the relative attomic masses of all the atoms in the numbers shown in the formula
what is the symbol of relative formula mass?
(Mr) (small r)
What is the symbol of relative atomic mass?
(Ar) (small r)
where are the relative atomic masses shown?
the periodic table
what happens with the (Mr) and the (Ar) in the experiment and why does this happen?
the sum of the relative formula masses of all the reactant is always equal to the sum of the relative formula masses of all the products. And this is due to the conservation of mass.
why does a change in mass sometimes happen?
this happens when the reactions are carried out in a non-closed system and include a gas that can enter or leave.
What is produced when magnesium is burned in the air?
Magnesium oxide is produced.
why does magnesium oxide weigh more than magnesium?
The magnesium is combined with the oxygen from the air and this oxygen has mass.
What is the law of conservation of mass?
mass is neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical or physical changes
