Atomic Structure Flashcards
Which number on an element is the mass?
the top number.
What is the bottom number on an element?
The Atomic (Proton) Number
How do you find the neutron number in an element?
subtract the number of protons with the mass number
What are the protons in an element the same as?
The electrons
What is the relative mass and charge of an electron?
Relatove Mass=Very Small Relative charge=-1
What is the relative mass and charge of a Proton?
Relative mass=1 Relative charge= +1
What is the relative mass and charge of a Neutron?
Relative Mass= 1 Relatove Charge= 0
Where in the atomic structure are the electrons located?
Shells
What is an isotope?
An isotope is one of two or more species of an element
Where are isotopes on the periodic table?
the same place as the original element.
What is similar between isotopes
Protons, electrons,(atomic number) and position in the periodic table.
What s different between isotopes?
Different atomic masses and physical properties along with neutrons.
What is an ion?
A positively/negatively charged atom
What do metals do to get a full outer shell?
lose electrons
What charge ions do metals/any element become when you lose electrons?
A positively charged ion
What happens when an element gains electrons to have a full outer shell?
It becomes a negatively charged ion
Why are certain ions positive?
because they have more protons than electrons, same goes for it being negative if there is less protons than electrons
What structure do positive ions mimick?
noble gases, due too the full outer shell
What structure do negative ions mimick?
Also noble gases, due to the full outer shell.
How are ions formed?
A transfer of electrons, which always take place when making a full outer shell.
what do opposites do?
attract,due to electrostatic forces.
Do ionic bonds melt/boil at high or low temperatures?
High
What must we do to make ionic lattices conduct electricity?
dissolve them in water.
