Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are Hydro carbons?
Naturally occuring compounds that contain Hydroggen and carbon ONLY
What do alkanes form?
a homologous series
What is homologous?
A family of compounds which all have the same functional group.
What is a functional group?
A specific group of atoms or bonds within a compound which give molecules simlar properties.
What is alkanes, functional group?
It doesnt have one
What are the endings for these chemicals
Alkenes: Alkanes: Alchahols:
Alkanes:Enes Alkanes:anes Alcahols:anol
What is The chemical name for glucose?
C6 H12 O6
What is a polymer
a chemical made of many repeating units
Why do Alkanes not form polymers
Alkanes have only single bonds and are very unreactive
What is an ion
an atom with a positive or negative charge
what do all homologous series have?
Same general formula and similar chemical properties
what does it mean if something is saturated?
their carbon atoms are joined by single bonds :C-C a double bond is C=C
What are alkenes less likely to do compared to alkanes?
Combust completely, so they burn in the air with a smoky flame.
What does methane contain
One carbon and four covalent bonds with hydrogen molecules
What is so different about alkenes?
They have a double covalent bond and have two “jazz hands” of hydrogen atoms each diagonally
