Fertilisers Flashcards
What do fertilisers provide for plants to help them grow
fertilisers provide mineral ions needed for healthy growth in plants and as plants grow the absorb the mineral ions from water in the soil through their root hair cells overtime the concentration of these ions decreases so farmers and gardeners add fertilizer to the soil
What do fertilisers contain
Fertilisers are formulations which may contain nitrogen phosphorus and potassium compounds to promote plant growth
Why must fertiliser compounds be soluble in water
So they can be absorbed by the plants root hair cells
What is ammonium sulfate
A salt that is used as a fertiliser dit that can also be manufactured by reacting on ammonia solution with sulfuric acid
What are the usual reaction conditions in the Haber process
A temperature of 450 degrees C A pressure of 200 atmospheres and an iron catalyst
How is sulfuric acid made
Sulphur + oxygen = sulphur dioxide
Sulphur dioxide + oxygen = sulphur trioxide though this is a equilibrium reaction and can be undone
Sulphur dioxide + water = sulfuric acid
