Self Report Techniques Flashcards
What is self report techniques
Refer to any sort of method where a person is asked to give their opinions, feelings, experiences and behaviours in relation to a particular topic
What are the 2 types of self report techniques and explain them
Questionnaire-data is collected through a number of written responses
Interviews-a face to face interaction where a set of questions are asked by an interviewer to an interviewee and results in a collection of data
What are 2 types of questionnaires and explain
Open questions- when the questions are phrased in a way that the pps is free to answer - collects qualitative data
Closed questions-questions that restricts you to a fixed number of responses- quantitative data
What is qualitative data
Non numerical
What is quantitative data
Data in numbers
Strengths of open questions in questionnaires
In depth and detail responses
Useful for sensitive topics as pps can elaborate on their answer
Limitations of open questions in questionnaires
Difficult to convert to statistical data hence more difficult to analyse
Difficult to summarise due to lots of info so difficult to draw patterns and conclusions
Strengths of closed questions
easy to analyse data and compare data
Limitations of closed questions in questionnaires
Lack of depth and detail
Can be limitated which can be frustrating for pps
Strengths of questionnaires
Cheap
Easy to analyse
Gather large amounts of data quickly gathered
Responses are anonymous so pps are more open
Limitations of questionnaires
Time consuming making them
Social desirability bias
Response bias
Explain how clarity makes questionnaires better
Reader needs to understand what is being asked
Ie use of double negatives is bad - 2 negative words in a question or double paralleled question*do you suffer from headaches and sickness? Is bad
How can the sequencing of questions make a better questionnaire
Starting with easy questions then building to harder questions to build confidence of pps
How can filler questions make a better questionnaire
These are questions that have nothing to do with the aims of the investigation and put in to distract pps from guessing the aim
How can a pilot study improve questionnaires
To ensure questionnaire is sustainable and you can make improvements
What is an example of a closed question
Which of the following makes you feel stressed at work?
[] workmates []noise at work []too much to do [] lack of control
Work is stressful
Strongly agree————————————————— strongly disagree
What is an example of open questions
What factors contribute to making work stressful?
What is a structured interview
The questions are decided in advance
What is an unstructured interview
Questions are not decided in advance and they develop as the interview goes on
Strengths of structured interview
Can easily be repeated as questions are standardised
Can make comparisons
Easier to analyse because answers are more predictable
Limitations of structured interview
Social desirability bias
Interviewer bias- how the answers are recorded
Strengths of a unstructured interview
Loads of data collected with more depth and detail due interviewer tailoring new questions
Limitations of a unstructured interview
Require interviewers with more skill due developing questions on the spot
Difficult to make comparisons between pps
Describe how to design an interview
Record information-write down the answers using a voice recorder
Location-quiet room
Neutral and genera, questions- relax pps
What is a semi constructed interview
Combination of prepared questions with the ability to ask additional questions
