Labatory And Field Experiments Flashcards
What is a lab experiment
-highly controlled setting where researcher has control over the variables being studied
-pps are aware that they are part of the experiment
What is a field experiment
-conducted in a more natural environment-not in a lab
-the IV is manipulated by the experimenter so casual relationships can be demonstrated
What are the strengths of a lab experiment
-high internal validity bc extraneous variables can be controlled
-replication-researchers can repeat experiments and check results
What are the limitations of a lab experiment
-low ecological validity -high degree of control makes the situation artificial unlike real life
-bias-pps know there being studied so may change their behaviour
What are the strengths of a field experiment
-naturalistic-pps are not aware that they are being studied so don’t respond to demand characteristics
-pps are more relaxed as it is in a natural setting
What are the limitations of a field experiment-
- Difficult to control extraneous variables
-major ethical issues as pps don’t know they’re being studied
