Measures Of Central Tendency And Dispersion Flashcards
What is the mean and how do you calculate
Arithmetic average- total of all values that is divided by the number of values
Strengths of mean
Makes use of all values
Good for interval data
Limitations of mean
Its influence by extreme scores(very high or low ) so it can be unrepresentative
What is the median
Arrange data from lowest to highest turbine find the middle
Strengths of median
Not effected by extreme scores
Appropriate for ordinal data
Limitations of median
Not as sensitive as exact values are not reflected in the final calculation
What is the mode
Most common data
Strengths of mode
Useful for nominal data- putting data in categories
Limitations of mode
Not useful when there are several modes
What is the range
Highest minus the lowest score
Strengths of range
Easy to calculate
Limitations for range
Affected by extreme values
Does not use all data
What is standard deviation
Shows the amount of variation In a data set- assess the spread of data around the mean
Strengths of standard deviation
Precise measure where all data values are taken into account
Limitations for standard deviation
Difficult to calculate
