Peer Review Flashcards
What is peer review
The assessment of scientific work by experts in the same field
What is the purposes of peer review
-to know which research is worthwhile hence funding can be allocated to it
- to validate the relevance and quality of research before its published- prevents fraudulent research
Being released
-to suggest possible improvements to study
-it can asses the quality of academic institutions ie uni-universities producing peer review articles are likely to be favoured by students and likely to be funded
Weakness of peer review (2) expert research still up
— it can be difficult to find an expert-Smith argues a lot of poor research will be passed because the reviewer didn’t understand the work
—once research study has been published-results remain in public view even if they later to be shown to be fraudulent or the results are poor
Give 2 weaknesses of peer review(2)
—publication bias in peer review-editors tend to publish headlines grabbing and positive results- negative results are intentionally not published/ not recognised if bad headline / not eye seeking
— anonymity is a problem-reviewers may have their identity a secret- Reviewer settle for old scores or bury rivalry research especially if they are competing for funds
