Natural And Quasi Experiments Flashcards
What is a natural experiment
The experimenter has not manipulated the IV directly when investigating relationships between DV and IV
What is a quasi experiment
An experiment where the iv has not been determined by research instead it naturally exists -iv usually a characteristic of a person ie gender different studies
Strengths of a natural experiment
-iv can’t be manipulated for ethical or practical reasons
-high external validity- ecological validity as you are dealing with real life situations
Limitations of a natural experiment
-random allocation so confounding variables can’t be controlled
-difficult to represent casual relationships because IV hasn’t been directly manipulated
Strengths of quasi experiments
-allows comparisons between types of people
- controlled conditions- replicable
Limitations of quasi experiments
-pps may be aware that they are they are being studied - risk if demand characteristics
-cannot randomly allocate pps so risk of confounding variables
