Features Of Science Flashcards
Scientific knowledge is based of 5 key features what are they
-empirical method
-objectivity
-replicability
-theory construction
-hypothesis testing
What is the empirical method
-information is gained from direct observation or experiment
Important aspect of the empirical method is objectivity
What is that
Data is not affected by the expectations of the researcher
-carefully controlled conditions results in objective data
What is replicability
The extent of which research can be repeated by other researchers due to standardised procedures this demonstrates the validity
What is theory construction
Gathering evidence from direct observation during investigations
It helps us understand and predict the world around us
What is hypothesis testing
It is where theorises are modified and good theories must be able to generate testable expectations
What is falsifiability
A theory can’t be considered scientific unless it allows itself to be proven untrue
Popper proposed the theory which states that successful Theo have been constantly tested and supported simply haven’t been proven false yet
What is a paradigm
A set of shared ideas and assumptions within a scientific discipline
What is a paradigm shift
A significant change in central assumptions within a scientific discipline resulting from a scientific revolution
What does Kuhn suggest about paradigms
Are what separate scientific disciplines from non scientific disciplines
He believes paradigm shifts show progress within a science
