Self-efficacy and confidence Flashcards
1
Q
Self-efficacy
A
- confidence that is specific to a situation = variable
- determine choice of activity, level of effort + degree of persistence
- high self-efficacy athletes = more likely to purse challenging goals, cope with pain + persevere through setbacks
2
Q
how can self-efficacy be developed + changed? - 4 major types of information
A
- performance accomplishments
- vicarious experiences
- verbal persuasion
- emotional arousal
3
Q
- performance accomplishments
A
- previous successful performances of difficult tasks
- provide dependable information
- tasks = appropriate with high probability of success as skills are developed
4
Q
vicarious experiences
A
- provided by watching successful performances of difficult tasks
- reduces anxiety = it is possible for task to be completed
- demonstration = very important –> performed by peers
5
Q
verbal persuasion
A
- providing encouragement to develop performer’s self-efficacy
- less effective
- can take several forms: feedback, team talks + verbal encouragement
- must be consistent, accurate, specific, realistic + progressive
6
Q
- emotional arousal
A
- how you interpret arousal
- somatic changes = reduce self-efficacy + confidence
- performers with less confidence = hindered by arousal
- anxiety reducing techniques increase self-efficacy –> difficult to change arousal levels
- knowledge + information about the activity = important + how the athlete is feeling
7
Q
effective goal setting
A
- can increase self-efficacy = if they’re SMART + individual
- routines ensure individuals achieve control over arousal –> linked to mental rehearsal
