- e.g. team picking captain based on leadership qualities shown

A
- suggests leaders are born with traits + qualities needed to be a leader
- leadership = innate
- ‘the ability to lead what is in front of you’

- anyone can be taught to be a good leader –> through observing behaviour of other good leaders
- these behaviours are reproduced if reinforced

- considers the interaction between individual + their situation

- focused on developing relationships with individuals in the group
- maintain communication
- develop respect + trust
- most effective with experienced + highly skilled athletes

- concerned with meeting goals + objectives
- create plans + decide on priorities
- aim to increase group productivity
- most effective with less experienced + less skilled athletes = need constant instruction + feedback

A
- task-orientated
- makes all the decisions
- motivated to complete tasks quickly + effectively
- does not take into account group’s opinions
- effective when quick decisions are needed

- motivated by the development of interpersonal relationships within team
- shares responsibility within the group
- effective in coactive sports
- most effective in moderately favourable situations

- allows group to make own decisions

- members of group tend to act aggressive towards one another
- little group cohesion
- group easily gives up + lacks direction
