Personality
Your unique individual makeup
Trait theory
Personality is innate + behaviours consistent in all situations
Attempts to profile the individual
Can be measured through questionnaires
Trait theory’s two main dimensions to personality
Introvert-extrovert dimension
Stable-neurotic dimension
Introvert-extrovert dimension
Introvert = shy + reserved, fast arousal levels + prefers isolation
Extrovert = outgoing + sociable, slow arousal levels + prefers interaction
Stable-neurotic dimension
Stable = predictable emotions + moods, no intense stress
Neurotic = extreme + unpredictable emotions + moods, high degrees of stress = anxious
4 personality types
Extrovert + stable
Extrovert + neurotic
Introvert + stable
Introvert + neurotic
Negatives of trait theory
Doesn’t take into account different situations
SLT
personality is learned from significant others > e.g. role models, peers + media
Behaviour is copied when reinforced
observe > identify > reinforced > copy
DARMMM
Demonstration
Attention
Retention
Motor reproduction
Motivation
Matched performance
Negative of SLT
Doesn’t take into account trait theory
E.g. of SLT
Young viewer watching poor behaviour in a football game who goes on to copy that poor behaviour
Interactionist theory
Combines both trait + social learning theories
Behaviour is adapted to the situation
Accounts for behaviour change
Interactionist theory formula
B = f(P x E)
Behaviour = function of personality x environment
E.g. of interactionist theory
A boxer can be calm at home but assertive in the boxing ring
