Self-Efficacy Flashcards
What is self-efficacy?
Self-efficacy is an individual’s expectations of success in a specific situation
(state specific self-confidence)
What is the relationship between high levels of self-efficacy and performance?
High levels of self-efficacy will lead to a higher level of performance, as the individual will show increased willingness to compete as a result of their “confidence”
What is Bandura’s self-efficacy model?
A model that shows the factors that impact self-efficacy, and how they impact athletic performance
Describe the components of Bandura’s self-efficacy model
Performance accomplishments,
vicarious experiences,
verbal persuasion
and emotional states
all impact level of efficacy, which directly impacts performance
What are performance accomplishments (BMOSE), and how do they impact efficacy levels?
Previous successes/losses
More wins removes self-doubt about winning, increasing SE
More losses creates a sense of ‘I will never be able to do this’, lowering SE
What are vicarious experiences (BMOSE), and how do they impact efficacy levels?
Watching someone else be successful at a task; has the most impact if they are at the same level as you
Watching someone of the same/less level = “If they can do it, so can I”
Watching someone of a higher level = “Just because they can do it doesn’t mean I can”
What is verbal persuasion (BMOSE), and how does it impact efficacy levels?
Persuasive techniques to influence the behaviour of participants, e.g, pep-talks “I know you can do it, I’ve seen you do it a hundred times”
If it comes from someone credible and knowledgeable it will increase an athletes self-efficacy
What are emotional states (BMOSE), and how do they impact efficacy levels?
Your thoughts and feelings at a particular time about a task
