The process of influencing teams and individuals towards achieving their goals
What are the 4 types of leaders?
Emergent and prescribed
Autocratic and democratic
What are prescribed leaders?
Leaders that are appointed by a person in authority
What are emergent leaders?
Leaders that emerge from a group and take over responsibility
What is an autocratic leader?
A leader who retains the power and makes all the decisions
What is a democratic leader?
A leader who allows the members of the group to have a say in the decision making process

A model that helps us understand leadership, and give guidance on how to be an effective leader

What are situational characteristics?

The characteristics of the situation the group is in, e.g., size, type of sport, winning/losing
What are leader characteristics?

The personal qualities of the leader
E.g., confidence, intelligence, assertiveness, self-motivation
What are member characteristics?

The different personality types of different groups of athletes
E.g., age, gender, ability level, experience
What is required behaviour?

The type of behaviour required of a leader in a particular situation in order to give best possible outcome
What is actual behaviour?

The behaviour the leader actually displays
What is preferred behaviour?

The preferred leadership of the group, depending on their characteristics
