Self-Confidence Flashcards
What is self-confidence?
The belief that you can perform a desired behavior
What is the relationship between self-confidence and performance?
As SC increases so does performance, up until SC level matches the demands of the task. Any further increases in SC will cause decrements in performance
What does over-confidence usually lead to?
Complacency, where an individual or team feel that their ability is so great that they don’t need to put in any effort to succeed
This will lead to a decrease in performance level
What are the 3 levels of confidence?
1) Lack of confidence
2) Optimal confidence
3) Over-confidence
What does Vealeys self-confidence model show?
This model shows that the relationship between self-confidence and performance is complex
What are the 4 layers of Vealey’s model of SC?
Layer 1 - Factors influencing SC
Layer 2 - Sources of SC
Layer 3 - Constructs of SC
Layer 4 - Consequences of SC

Factors influencing SC
‘What impacts sport-confidence’
- Split into 2 sides, demographic + personality characteristics, and organisational culture
- Demographic characteristics = ethnic background, socioeconomic status, race, sex
- Personality characteristics = attitudes, traits, beliefs
- Organisational culture = motivational climate, level of competition, expectations from coaches
Break down Layer 2 of Vealey’s model of SC
Sources of SC
‘Where sport-confidence comes from’
- Split into 3 parts; Mastery, self-regulation and social climate
- Mastery = Current level of skill/ability
- Self-regulation = mental/physical preparation of task
- Social climate = Support from coaches/other significant others
Break down Layer 3 of Vealey’s model of SC
Constructs of SC
‘Types of self-confidence’
- Split into 3 parts; Cognitive efficiency, physical skills/training, and resiliency
- Cognitive efficiency = confidence in decision making
- Physical skills/training = Confidence in your ability to execute a skill/task
- Resiliency = Confidence in overcoming setbacks and working against adversity
Break down Layer 4 of Vealey’s model of SC
Consequences of SC
‘How the sport confience will manifest in the athlete’
- Split into 3 parts; affect, behaviour, and cognition
- Affect = how an athlete feels
- Behaviour = how an athlete behaves
- Cognition = how an athlete thinks
