Mindset Flashcards
What are the 2 types of mindsets?
Fixed and growth
What is a fixed mindset?
Encompasses the belief that performance is due to the amount of talent or ability that an individual possesses
What is a growth mindset?
Encompasses the belief that performance is the result of practice and hard work rather than talent
What research did Dweck conduct for her mindset theory?
- She sampled 330 students (aged 11-12) and used a questionnaire to split them into 2 groups
- One group who believed intelligence is most important for success (fixed), and one group who believed that intelligence can be developed with effort (growth)
- She then gave each group 12 tasks, 8 easy and 4 more difficult
- Students in both groups completed the first 8 tasks with ease
- Studies showed that the fixed group gave up quickly with the 4 difficult tasks, but the growth group persevered and had a higher rate of success
What did Dweck’s theory prove?
This experiment shows that performance is not soley due to intelligence
What is 10,000 hours?
It is a view that suggests to achieve excellence, you must accumulate 10,000 hours of practice
Based on a study of a violinist, who began playing at 5 years old, and by the age of 20 had reached elite level after practicing for 10,000 hours
What is learned helplessness?
An attitude that is characterised by an individual saying ‘I am no good at this activity and never will be’, caused by a fixed mindset
