Group Processes Flashcards
What is group processes?
How a group of people work together to achieve a goal
What is an interactive team?
Those who’s success is dependent on the members working closely together
What is a coactive team?
Those where the members are performing the same skills at the same time together
What is the ‘theory’ that supports group processes?
Tuckman’s stages of group development
What are the 5 stages of Tuckman’s stages of group development?
Stage 1 - forming
Stage 2 - storming
Stage 3 - norming
Stage 4 - performing
Stage 5 - adjourning
Break down stage 1 of Tuckman’s stages of group development
Forming
The group comes together, with individuals meeting and familiarising themselves with other members
At this point the individuals are seeings whether they fit in with the group
Break down stage 2 of Tuckman’s stages of group development
Storming
A period of conflict follows the forming stage as individuals seek their roles and status within the group
E.g., rebellion against the leader
Break down stage 3 of Tuckman’s stages of group development
Norming
Once hostility/fighting has been overcome, either by athletes leaving or accepting the values of group, a period of norming occurs
The group starts to cooperate and work together to reach common goals
Break down stage 4 of Tuckman’s stages of group development
Performing
The group members work together to achieve their mutual goals
Relationships in the group have become well established, as have issues regarding roles/leadership
What is Steiner’s model of group effectiveness?
Actual productivity = potential productivity - process losses
What are process losses? (Steiner model)
Losses due to working as part of a group, e.g., coordination, communication problems and losses in motivation
What is social loafing?
Individuals working in
a team giving less effort as they would do if they were working individually
What is the Ringelmann effect?
The tendency of individuals to expend less effort when working as part of a team than when they work individually
Research shows that rowers in larger teams give less effort than those in smaller. What are the statistics?
1 person = 100%
2 people = 90% each
4 people = 80% each
8 people = 65% each
