Supplementary materials.
These are books and other materials we can use in addition to the coursebook.
Why do we use supplementary materials?
To replace unsuitable material, to provide material missing from the book, to provide suitable material for learners’ interests or needs, to give extra practice or to add variety.
Class library of readers.
Encourages extensive reading and gives confidence, but it’s neccesary to have a range of levels and maybe it is not motivating enough.
Skill practice books.
Focus on individual skills but may not suit the lesson.
Teacher’s resource books or worksheets.
They give new ideas for a lesson, but may not fit lesson aims.
Websites.
Add variety, but can be difficult to have PCs or proper students manage skills.
DVDs
Provide visual and cultural context, but language may not be graded.
Language practice books.
Extra practice and self management, but can be repetitive and with little or no context.
Electronic materials.
They can motivate and be familiar, but are hard to control and sometimes without human feedback.
Games.
Can be enjoyed and introduce language practice, but may not suit old learners, also, classroom management
