Differences between L1 and L2 learning. Flashcards
L1 learning (age)
It starts when the learner is a baby and cotinues through childhood, adolescence and so on.
Learners learn the language at the same time as their cognitive skills.
Learners need to communicate and this is the main reason to learn.
L2 learning (age)
It starts usually in primary school or adulthood. Learners have already or are developing their cognitive skills. On top of that, people have expectations of how to learn and may be motivated or not.
L1 learning (context and way to learn)
This means people learn by exposure and picking up; usually in chunks through interaction. With strong motivation. With a big silence period and after that lots of opportunities to experiment. They receive lots of encouragement and praise. It is usual to hear simplified speech and people always is re formulating what he or she said wrong.
L2 learning (context and way to learn)
People learn through exposure to specific language items, focusing in structures and words. They are strong or unmotivated. The main interaction is with the teacher talking about things outside the classroom. Besides, we are required to speak after we have been taught, it means, short silence period. Lots of controlled practice activities.
The amount of praise and encouragement vary; little individual attention. Teachers correct mistakes.
It sometimes can take place not neccesarily inside of the classroom.
