Section 1 - Safety Flashcards
What is a computer
Anything that takes input, processes, stores and outputs
What is a workstation
A desktop computer
What is a server
Usually a rack-mounted computer used to host a file and print sharing server
What is a laptop
Mobile version of a workstation
Define tablet
Portable computer that consists of a touchscreen and computing hardware
Define smartphone
Smaller version of tablets, able to make and receive calls and texts
Define smart device
Device that has the ability to compute e.g. Alexa
Define IOT (Internet of things)
Any computer that can connect to a network
What common components are most computers going to rely on
Hardware, Software, Firmware
Define Hardware
Any part of the computer that you can pickup move around open and close
Define software
Instruction for hardware
What is storage
saving of data for future use
Define firmware
Specialised type of software on a chip
What 3 types of software exist
OS Software, Application Software, Drivers
Define OS Software
Provides a method for saving, retrieving, changing, printing and transmitting info
Define Application Software
Used to create, store, modify and view info/data
Define drivers
Used to translate commands from the OS to a piece of hardware
Types of safety
Personal, electrical, chemical, component
What does personal safety include
Trip hazard avoidance, proper lifting technique and safety ger usage
What is a trip hazard
Anything that’s in the way or where people walk
Define ESD
Electrostatic discharge occurs when electrons from your body rush from the body to a component
What is involved in Component safety
Usage of antistatic bag to hold components, ESD wrist strap when handling components and an ESD mat to hold the tower
Expand on electrical safety
Shut down the computer, disconnect the power then go to work
Expand on chemical safety
Proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals. An MSDS (material safety data sheet) will be found on the item.
What is the correct troubleshooting method to be used
1)Identify the problem, 2)Establish a theory of probable cause, 3)Test the theory to determine the cause, 4)Establish a plan of action to resolve the problem and implement the solution,5)Verify full system functionality and preventative measures, 6) Document findings, actions and outcome
