S19 - Printer Types Flashcards
function of laser printer
Creates an entire page at once during the printing process
Define Image drum
Main component that creates the image to be applied to the paper
Define fuser Assembly
Heats up and melts the toner onto the page to adhere properly to the page
Transfer Belt/Roller
Used as a way to transfer the image from the image drum and become fused
Define Pickup Roller
Used to pickup the paper form the feed tray and feed it through a system
Define Paper Separation Pad
Helps the pickup rollers to ensure they only pickup a single piece of paper at a time
Define Duplexing Assembly
Moves the paper from the front to the back
What is a toner cartridge
A plastic housing that contains toner powder
7 steps to laser printing which is called the Electrophotographic (EP) printing process
Processing, Charging, Exposing, Developing, Transferring, Fusing, Cleaning
Laser Printing Processing
The OS uses a print driver to translate what’s on the screen to print
laser printing charging
The imaging drum is conditioned with the primary charge roller
laser printing exposing
The surface coding of the photosensitive imaging drum loses its charge when exposed to light
laser printing developing
The laser printer takes the toner and applies it to a developer roller
laser print transferring
Moving the toner from the imaging drum into the print media, usually a piece of paper
laser print fusing
The fuser squeezes the paper between a hot roller and a pressure roller
laser print cleaning
The photosensitive drum needed to be cleaned and get all the remaining toner particles cleaned off
Before modifying the internals of the laser printer what should you do
Turn it off and allow it to cool down
Recommendation for storing printer paper
Putting it in a dry location without high humidity or excessive dust
Standard toner cartridge capacity
2500 pages
High yield toner cartridge
6000 pages
Tips for getting extra prints out of your cartridge
Shake it around, the toner is very fine and so the lower capacity warning may just be due to the location of the toner powder
Define Printer Calibration
Process by which the printer determines the print density of colour balance to use, usually automatic and has a button to do it for you
Why is an Inkjet printer’s name what it is
Creates an image on the paper through a nozzle or jet on a printhead onto a paper
What is a slightly more expensive alternative to thermal method that requires less replacing
Piezoelectric method
Why do you save money in the long run with the piezoelectric method
Ink carts are cheaper
Define Inkjet roller
Responsible for advancing the paper through the printer
Define Inkjet feeder
Allows multiple pieces of paper in a tray to be heled , whilst also letting one piece of paper pass at a time while using the roller
Define Carriage Belt/Carriage System
Allows the printhead to move back and fourth across the page
What is the only variation that you will see with Inkjet printers
Uni-directional printing or Bi-directional printing
Define Unidirectional Printing
Only prints left to right
Define Bidirectional printing
Printhead will apply ink from left tor right and right to left - is faster
What are the 2 types of Inkjet printer
Piezoelectric and Thermal
Difference between Inkjet and Laser
Line printer instead of page printer, higher cost/page with Inkjet
What do most manufacturers include built into the Inkjet Cart
A sensor, warning for low ink count
Define thermal printer
Type of printer that uses a heating element to create an image
Difference between Inkjet and Thermal printer when displaying the image on the page
Inkjet heats the ink which is then transferred to the page whereas the thermal actually heats areas of the page to display the image, no ink is involved
What are thermal printers usually used for
printing receipts
2 types of thermal output
ribbons and thermal paper
What determines the quality of the thermal print output and how is it measured
Number of prints the printhead contains , DPI (Dots per inch) e.g. 200 dpi
What can you use to clean the thermal printhead
isopropyl alcohol
What measurement is used for impact printers
DPI
Define tracks
Series of holes going down the side of the paper with a perforation between the regular paper and tracks
Define tractor feed
Exists on both sides of the printer and pulls the paper through the printer uses tractor fed paper
Common use of impact printers
Multipart forms printed at the same time
Define 3D printer
Printer that creates images in 3 dimensions (depth, width, height)
Common building materials for 3 printing
plastic / resin
Define slice
one layer of the overall 3D model
Define print bed/ build plate
flat plate where the material will be extruded and built
define bed / build surface
sheet placed on top of the base plate that will hold the object into position while printing
Define extruder
Printhead for 3D printers
Define Gears, Motors and motion control
Stays in pace or moves up, down, left, or right
Define filament
3D printer ink
2 types of plastic filament
PLA, ABS
