SDG's Flashcards
rationale
the SDG’s work in the spirit of partnerships and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve life in a sustainable way for future generations
- seek to build on the MDG’s and complete what they didn’t achieve
- balance the 3 dimensions of sustainable development
- seek to free people from the tyranny of poverty & thereby strengthen universal peace
who created the SDG’s?
the united nations
why were the SDG’s created?
are a plan of actions for people, planet and prosperity. The SDG’s seek to build on the work achieved by the Millennium development goals which included halving extreme poverty. But more work still needed to be done to achieve better life for all citizens and therefore the SDG’s were created to continue the work of the MDG’s
objectives
- end extreme poverty
- fight inequality & discrimination
- address climate action
collaborative approach
achieving the SDG’s requires collaborative approaches between countries (low, middle & high income) between groups within communities, between the health sector an other sectors.
SDG 3
good H&W- ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages
what are the SDG 3 targets?
- reduce the global maternal mortality ratio
- end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5
- end epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water borne diseases & other communicable diseases
- reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention treatment and promote mental H+W
- reduce the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents
- ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health care services
- achieve universal health coverage, including access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all
- reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemical and air, eater and soil pollution and contamination
explain why the UN broadened the millennium development goals to create the sustainable development goals with a focus on sustainability
the UN broadened the MDG’s with a focus on sustainability because the scope of the goals needed to be broadened to reflect the challenged the world faces today, to include economic growth, environmental sustainability and social inclusion and so that the goals were seen to relate together rather the be addressed individually

- non communicable diseases
- mental health
- substance abuse
