diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that affects your body’s ability to produce or use insulin
dementia
a general term for disorders that are characterised by deteriorating mental processes e.g. alzheimers
COPD
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:
a progressive and longe team lung diseases where damage to the lungs obstructs oxygen intake and causes increasing shortness of breath
chronic diseases
diseases marked by long duration and frequent recurrences which often progress slowly (communicable diseases)
cholesterol
a waxy, fat-like substance used by the body to build cell walls
cerebrovascular disease
any disorder of the blood vessels supplying the brain or covering its covering membranes e.g. stroke
CVD
cardio vascular disease:
includes all diseases and conditions of the heart and blood vessels caused mainly by blood supply to the heart, brain and legs
cancer
a range of diseases categorised by uncontrolled and abnormal cell growth. cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body, causing further damage
atherosclerosis
the hardening and thickening of the walls of there arteries as a result of plaque on their inner lining this build up may slow doesn’t or stop blood flow
asthma
a chronic condition that affects the small air passages of the lungs. when exposed to certain triggers the airways will narrow, making it hard for them to breathe
low birthweight
the weight of baby at birth less then 2500g
high blood pressure
when blood is being pumped through the arteries at a harder and faster rate then is considered normal and healthy
also known as hypertension
fibre
a type of carbohydrate the body doesn’t digest
- provodes a feeling of ‘satiety’
osteoporosis
a medical condition in which bones become bottle and fragile from loss of tissue typically as a result of calcium deficiency
type 2 diabetes
a disorder in which a persons body produces insulin in order to metabolise blood sugar but either doesn’t produce enough or does not utilise it effectively
