Science- Atoms Flashcards
what happens when atoms bond?
they become stable
If the valence shell has one valence electron, what can it do to become stable?
bond with another unstable atom to become stable
a loss or gain of electrons
ionic bond
when do ionic bonds occur?
between a metal and nonmetal
i have less than four valence electrons, will loose electrons and can be found in groups 1, 2, and 3. what am i?
metal
i have more than 4 valence electrons, will gain electrons, control the bond, and can be found in groups 5, 6, and 7. what am i?
nonmetal
why will a positive nucleus pull an electron to it?
it wants to be stable
what will happen if an atom is unstable?
it can loose electrons
what do positive nuclei control?
electrons
the number of atoms of an element found in a compound
subscript
no charge, means there will be the same number of protons and electrons
nuetral
metals will always form a (blank) ion, and nonmetals will always form (blank) ions.
positive, negative
the é config. of fluorine is 2-7. the é config. of lithium is 2-1. how would these two bond?
the valence é on lithium would transfer to fluorine to make fluorine 2-8 and they would both be stable
what do positive and negative ions form?
a compound
the after bond of lithium is 3 protons, 2 electrons. would Li be positive or negative? why?
positive, protons are positive, and since there are more of them, that makes Li positive
