Science- Activation Energy Flashcards
energy needs for a reaction to take place
heat of reaction
made up of unstable + unbonded atoms
activated complex
increases activation energy, takes more energy to take place, slows down reaction
inhibitor
activation energy
least amount of energy needed for a reaction to take place
effective collision
enough energy to break a bond
speeds up reactant, gives more energy to system, lowers activation energy
calalyst
how do you calculate the heat of a reaction?
heat of rxn = product - reactant
endothermic reaction:
+ heat of rxn, nonspontaneous, energy will be a reactant, feels cold, takes in energy, energy of rxn < energy of product
how do you calculate the activation energy?
activated complex = activated complex - reactant
exothermic reaction:
heat of rxn + spontaneous, energy will be a product, feels hot, releases energy, energy of rxn > energy of product
