schedules of reinforcement (pack 2 OC) Flashcards
what else did skinner study
how reinforcers had to be used at a particular time to reinforce behaviour
what happens if there is no reinforcement
their behaviour may become extinct
what did skinner propose
there are different patterns of reinforcement which have different effects on the speed of learning (response rate) and on whether extinction occurs
what is response rate
ratio of the number of ppt in a study to the number of ppt who were asked to participate
what is extinction rate
the gradual mecheing of a conditioned response that results in behaviour decreasing or disappearing
what was the aim of skinners superstitious pigeon study
he wanted to see if any reinforcing situation would yield a response
procedure of pigeon study
each of the 8 pigeons were staved to 75% their weight
food hopper placed into skinners box where they could eat at regular intervals throughout the day
results of pigeon study
one pigeon turned anti-clockwise
another pigeon showed a head tossing response
pigeons gave a specific response when the hopper appeared to give food as a reward
conclusion of pigeon study
pigeons behaved as if their behaviour in this study was the cause of the reward
what four schedules of reinforcement did skinner suggest
fixed ratio reinforcement-
fixed interval reinforcement-
variable ratio reinforcement-
variable interval reinforcement-
fixed ratio reinforcement
behaviour is reinforced only after the behaviour occurs a set number of times
fixed interval reinforcement
reinforcement given after a fixed time interval providing at least one correct response has been made
variable ratio reinforcement
means that the reinforcement or punishment is given is randomly with regard to the number of responses achieved
variable interval reinforcement
means that reinforcement is given after variable amounts of time. It can be given at one, two or five minutes
