imitation of film mediated aggressive models Bandura (pack 4 2nd study) Flashcards
aim
investigate whether a filmed model would have the same effect as a live model on childre’s aggression
a secondary aim was to investigate whether cartoon violence would have a similar impact to realistic filmed aggression
sample
48 boys and 48 girls from Stanford university nursery
stage 1 modelling (10 mins)
condition 1- real life aggression same as first study
tinkertoy set
hit head with mallet
hit him down
he keeps coming back for more
condition 2-
semi-darkened room, introduced them to picture materials, movie shown on screen, 6ft from table. Filmed played for 10 mins and same adult males and females who participated in the real-life condition of the experiment
condition 3- cartoon
TV 3ft away from table
‘I guess i’ll turn on the colour TV’
cartoon performed by female model dressed up in black cat costume
‘herman the cat’
bobo doll his head with mallet
verbal aggression repeated in high-pitched voice
stage 2 mild aggression arousal (two mins)
each child taken into room two
subjected to mild aggression arousal…attractive toys
child played for 2 mins
experimenter stopped them and said that they were his best toys and were for other children
stage 3 test for delayed imitation (20 mins)
each child taken into room 3
contained aggressive toys such as bobo doll and peg board
non aggressive toys were crayons etc.
experimenter stayed with them as some refused to go in alone, experimenter worked discreetly at end of room for 20 mins
two observers scored the subjects behaviour at five second intervals, which gave 240 observations
results
mean total real life aggression- 83
mean total human film aggression -92
mean total cartoon aggression- 99
mean total control group aggression- 54
conclusion
observing filmed aggressive acts will lead to imitation of aggression acts by children
concluded that learning was vicarious (derived from indirect sources such as hearing or observation)
validity
S- lab setting and had a number of controls, control group of ppt used to provide bandura with a baseline measurement to which he could compare the effect of 3 conditions
enabled bandura to measure the difference
regarded to be scientific and provides psychology as a discipline with credibility within the wider scientific community
reliability
reliability of the measurements that were carried out by two observers to record behviour of delayed imitation
two observers trained to a reliable standard
one observer blind to the condition to avoid bias
ensures inter-rater reliability
ecological validity
done in lab setting, seeing reinforced behaviour through an enactment of aggression on a bobo doll
none carried out by parents which the children would have been more familiar with
ethics
ppt were exposed to aggressive reinforcements which may have influenced or changed their behaviour
not fully protected from harm
generalisability
all children from university nursery, sample may have been biased
The majority of children sons/daughters of academics, not representativce of the wider population
