what does flooding involve
the phobic person being placed in a situation where their feared object/situation for a prolonged period with no means of removing themselves from the situation
what idea does flooding use
idea that a phobic response is caused by an alarm reaction and that these emotions only have a certain longevity before they subside
what is the biological basis of flooding and how do they link
alarm reaction is giving person fight or flight
blood sugar made available and digestion ceases as body goes into high alert
As the body uses up the blood sugar then it will start to calm down
As the body calms, the parasympathetic nervous system begins to work and this will in turn calm the sympathetic nervous system
how do they carry out flooding
an individual is placed into the feared environment without any skills of relaxation
An individual learns to get through it themselves
effectiveness
regarded to be an effective method to reduce fears
works faster than other therapies

limitations
applications are limited, useful for phobias but the treatment is not useful for other mental health conditions
some clients have reported that they acquire more anxiety
ethics
involves trauma so it is not ethical because the phobic is purposely put into distress
