main principles of OC (pack 3) Flashcards
what did skinner believe behaviour was shaped by?
it’s consequences
what model did skinner propose
ABC model
what does ABC stand for and what do they mean
Antecedent (situation or stimulus that triggers behaviour)
Behaviour (response made by organism)
consequences (what happens because of behaviour)
what are the two main types of consequences and what do they mean?
reinforcers- consequences from environment that increase probability of a behaviour being repeated (P or N)
punishers- consequences from environment that decrease likelihood of behaviour being repeated
what are the two types of reinforcers?
primary reinforcers- rewards focused on a basic need
secondary reinforcers- rewards that can satisfy a basic need, but itself is not a basic need`
why is punishment different from reinforcement?
it is discouraging behaviour
negative reinforcement encourages behaviour because something unpleasant is being taken away
in contrast, punishment means doing something unpleasant to stop the behaviour
what is a positive and negative punishment?
positive- adding a negative stimulus to punish someone
negative- taking away something positive
what is the problem with punishment?
it does not promote or give info about the desired behaviour it only stops the undesirable behaviour
