Scene 7 Flashcards
LADY COOKE: Tell her to have a bath, and then come. Cheerio!
A few months later, bathed, with fear, trembling, I set foot in Polstead Hall.
PETER: I’m sorry to disturb you.
No… Sorry -
PETER: I was looking for my sister, Lady Cooke. She’s not expecting me, I’m afraid I have turned up at her door like the prodigal brother I am. You must be one of her friends?
No - not really - I’m Maria Marten from the village.
PETER: Oh, no - please -
I don’t normally look like this.
PETER: How do you normally look?
A bit of a mess, if i’m honest. I hadn’t realised just how much of a mess, until today.
PETER: I should’ve thought you look very fine no matter what.
I must get changed, I’ll be needed back home.
PETER: May I assist you - do you have far to go?
Oh no - thank you - it’s only round the corner.
PETER: It’s pouring with rain, though - have you an umbrella?
I must have forgotten it.
PETER: Let me lend you one of ours. Here -
This should keep the worst at bay.
Thank you.
PETER: Peter Matthews.
Thank you, Mr. Matthews. I’ll bring it back.
PETER: Lovely. No rush.
I wanted to see Mr. Matthews every day, and I wanted Lady Cooke to love me like a sister. And I really wanted to keep the green umbrella
