Scene 15 Flashcards
SARAH: Maria? Hello, love!
Why didn’t you come? You said you’d come and meet me - I waited all evening
SARAH: I left you a message - didn’t you get it?
I know you went to the ballet with Lady Cooke -
SARAH: Sorry - say that again - ?
Don’t deny it-
SARAH: Who told you this? William?
Well. He said-
SARAH: I left a message with him. I couldn’t come out cos there’s no one to mind the boys, but I said for you to come here.
Oh.
SARAH: He didn’t say?
No - he did say something - maybe I misunderstood - just I got the impression that..
SARAH: That what?
Just that you and Theresa are always so… you’re always together just the two of you.
SARAH: Cos you’re always with William, not cos we don’t want you, silly.
I knew you’d tell me I was silly.
SARAH: What did you want to talk about? Maria, if you have got yourself into some sort of trouble -
No I haven’t, but-
THERESA: Maria! How are you?
You could have just told me she was here and I’d have gone.
THERESA: If she keeps running off like that, she’s going to be right.
When I tell him about the baby, he walks out, and I don’t see him for seven days. Everybody leaves. I am so utterly unlovable and disgraced.
In the end, I go to the farmhouse and ring the front doorbell, he drags me into a side room.
I’ve planned this. I kneel at his feet and kiss his shoes. I don’t dare to look up. I wish that I wasn’t crying, that I could summon some sort of dignity. He is gone, and I vomit. I walk away and leave it there, a tiny puddle of revenge. But when I reach the kitchen I go back and clear it up.
