SARAH: How are you?
I did it, I finally killed her and she is dead.
ANN: Go and look.
She’s not there, William took her because he saw me do it. He saw me hurt her, without even knowing. You should stay away in case I hurt you too.
ANN: Oh, God save us -
Think about it, Annie. I could not be a mother to a girl. What sort of example would I be?
ANN: Maria, where has he taken her? Where has he gone?
To the field. To pray, I expect. For a better mother to his child next time.
He told me to go back to bed and pretend it never happened, because if this gets out I will be hanged.
ANN: No one will be hanged, love.
They’re after me - they’re coming up the hill -
Ann: Who is?
Shhh - the constable - they’re going to arrest me for killing my little girl. There are too many bastards, And William! He loves me - can you believe him? But there’s a warrant out for my arrest-
ANN: Stop this-
So he’s going to take me away. I need to be in disguise.
If I go as a man, they will not know me and I will not be stopped.
ANN: Maria! Stop it!

ANN: Maria…

I can’t seem to work out what’s right.
ANN: I don’t think anybody’s coming after you.
But William saw them. He is the only one who ever truly loved me, though sometimes I doubt him, and then he gets so upset.
ANN: Maria. Has William ever hurt you? Or the baby? Did he ever hit you?
No. No, no, no, no, no. He has never laid a finger on me. He is the only one who has every really wanted me, even though I’m a bad mother.
ANN: You are not a -
He wants it to be just us. Isn’t that the most beautiful thing you ever heard?
ANN: Don’t say goodbye like this.
I don’ trust him.
If anything happens it will be your fault! You never gave him a chance. It’s no wonder he wants to get me away from you.
ANN: Maria! -
He’s the only one that really loves me - and yet you hate him! You’re always insinuating that I should give him up. It just makes me love him all the more - I will never forget what you have done to us - I hate you!
I’m to meet him at the red barn. I have to go.
