Scene 4 Flashcards
ANN: What about dinner?
Have some beer.
ANN: You won’t? Well - we were relying on the money.
Ann. I can hear little Ambrose calling for you upstairs.
Probably bumped his head again - I’ll see Mister Thomas out.
THOMAS: Of course.
I thought we were friends.
THOMAS: I feel bad about your father. It was our mistake, not his.
The other day, when you tried to kiss me. I liked it
THOMAS: You didn’t give me that impression.
Didn’t I?
THOMAS: You hit me rather hard across the face.
Isn’t that what women are supposed to do when young men surprise them? You can try again, if you like.
Only, promise me one thing?
THOMAS: What?
The moles. Give the job to my father.
There were good days, when I tried to like him and almost succeded. And bad days, when our love was a quiet tug-of-war.
My first time was rushed. We did it here, in the very barn that I’m buried in. I used to like coming here when I was alive. The way the daylight creeps in through the broken slats. The warmth of hay bales and the sound of chickens outside.
It’s a peaceful place to wait, until I am discovered.
