Scene 16 Flashcards
ANN: So you’re going to stay in Sudbury for a few weeks. Just visiting a friend.
Exactly.
ANN: And he’s gonna go too, is he? Or not?
William is going to escort me there on his horse. And then he will come to visit, I expect.
SARAH: Maria! It’s us! Maria, are you there? Maria!
What are you doing here?
PHOEBE: We’ve come to see you-
You can’t, you have to go. He could arrive at any moment.
PHOEBE: William?
He’s very upset at the moment - it’s difficult for him.
SARAH: For him really? Because in my experience, childbirth is much harder for the woman.
Shhhhh. Don’t - for Gods sake -
PHOEBE: Where is the baby
There are. She - has bruises
SARAH: Bruises?
You should go. Please.
PHOEBE: We’re not going - we’re worried about you.
Get off - you’ll take her from me.
PHOEBE: We won’t.
Promise you won’t tell anyone-
SARAH: Yeah.
I gave them to her. The bruises.
PHOEBE: You hurt her?
I was so tired. I fell asleep, and when I woke William was there, shaking me, and shouting - he was in a terrible state, and the baby was screaming.
He said I’d hurt her. He’d walked into the room, and as he entered he saw me.
And then he said-
There are strangle marks.
Do you think I’ll be locked away? Is there a devil in me?
PHOEBE: Where is William now?
He was so angry and upset - he left and hasn’t come back.
PHOEBE: Listen to me, Maria, apart from that moment, has she suffered from any other mysterious injuries.
No. I don’t seem to have control over what I do - and William hates me now, because I am a bad mother -
he saw it happen.
SARAH: (to PHOEBE) We should take her home-
I can’t leave here - this is the only place he knows where to find us.
