Scene 10 Flashcards
(Cherry Fair dancing)
Not only did I fall in love before I died, but I have good reason to beleive that he loved me in return, and there is much to be said for that. We had many months of actual real happiness. Then, one day -
PETER: My father knows
My sister told him, She thought she was being kind.
What did he say?
PETER: He wept.
I’m not good enough for his son -
PETER: I want to marry you.
Is that - alright?
It’s a bloody miracle.
PETER: I have booked rooms at an Inn nearby. But we can go home any time you want.
Separate rooms?
PETER: Yes, of course.
Cancel one. Tell them that I am your wife.
PETER: Maria. You don’t have to -
I want to be your wife, and to have children with you, and never be apart from you, and to go wherever you go, and to finally mean something.
PETER: Certainly not.
It’s alright, Peter.
LADY COOKE: What sort of life do you imagine that you might have together?
We talked of a house. He would like to run a business, he could begin by making investments-
LADY COOKE: If you love him, and I think you do, then you must be the one to break it off.
If I had married Peter Mathews and lived a long and happy - or even - unhappy - life with him, you would not be here. You would not care about that story.
It’s alright, my love. We will live. You will be happy.
