sac 6 (approaches) Flashcards
approaches to describing normality
there are 6 approaches. each from different perspective.
normality
the state of having thoughts, feelings, and
behaviours that are considered common and acceptable
list approaches to describing normality
socio-cultural, functional, historical, medical, statistical, situational approaches.
socio-cultural approach
Thoughts, feelings and behaviours are considered normal based on the
particular social or cultural expectations that the person is in.
functional approach
Thoughts, feelings and behaviour are considered normal if the person
is able to cope with functioning normally in society.
historical approach
What is considered normal or abnormal depends on the time/era when
the judgement is made.
medical approach
Abnormal thoughts, feelings and behaviours are considered to have
underlying biological (medical) causes and can usually be diagnosed
and treated.
statistical approach
If the majority of people in a group
think/feel/behave in a certain way it
is considered normal.
People who think/feel/behave in a
way that is different to the statistical
average, it is considered abnormal.
situational approach
Within a culture or society, certain thoughts/feelings/behaviours are
considered normal in one situation but abnormal in the other.
conceptualisation of normality
Another way of approaching normality is
through typical and atypical behaviours, which
relate to how common behaviour is for an
individual.
typical
normal. how the person usually
acts, occasionally behaviour is quite
different/inconsistent.
atypical
person acts in ways that
are unusual for them.
atypical development
is development that
is NOT typical. It is noticeably different
from what is usual or appropriate.
adaptive and maladaptive behaviours
Another way of approaching normality is
through adaptive and maladaptive
behaviours.
This relates to the extent to which
behaviour enhances or impairs an
individual’s ability to match the changing
demands of their everyday life.
Adaptive behaviour
actions that enable a person to effectively carry out
their usual everyday tasks
