A

combines the neural information received from the dendrites and sends it to the axon

Q

myelin sheath

A

white fatty substance that coats and helps insolate the axon from the activity of other nearby neurons. small gaps in it are known as nodes of ranvier which increase the speed of the action

Q

axon terminals

A

end of axon are axon collaterals and the end of those are axon terminals. they have a synaptic button which secretes a chemical called a neurotransmitter.

Q

neurons

A
specialised nerve cells in the nervous systems that enable communication of information around the body
occurs by:
- receiving
- transmitting
- processing information

Q

glial cells + roles of

A

support neurons. without them neuros could not function. estimated one for each neuron.

  • hold neuron in place
  • provides neurons with nutrients and oxygen
  • repairs neurons
  • eliminate diseased or damaged neurons
  • insulates neurons from each other
  • produces myelin
  • aids with neurotransmitting

Q

transmission process

A
  1. neural transmitters travel through dendrites to soma where they are converted to action potentials and travel along the axon
  2. reaches the axon terminals and stimulates the release of neural transmitters
  3. terminal buttons send the signal to the next neuron
  4. neuro transmitters carry the signal across the synaptic gap
  5. the receptors on the next neuron receive the message
  6. the process repeats
