sac 5 nervous system Flashcards
the nervous system
enables our brain to obtain information about what is going on inside and outside the body
3 main functions of the nervous system
- to receive information
- to process information
- to coordinate a response to information
interneuron
acts as a link between sensory and motor neurons that are found in the CNS
spinal reflex
occurs in response to certain stimuli without any involvement of the brain
- involuntary
- automatic
- protects your body from danger
central nervous system (CNS)
processes received information and activates appropriate responsive actions.
-central to all our mental processes
CNS involves
BRAIN
network of cells that process information through nerve pathways and directs the response
SPINAL CORD
long bundle of nerve tissue from our brain.
- sensory neurons send information to the brain through the spinal cord and then the brain sends motor neurons back through the spinal cord to the body
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
the whole network of nerves. sends information to and from the CNS
SA/ME
sensory and afferent neuron.
motor and efferent neurons .
PNS involves
SOMSTIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
nerves that carry sensory information to the CNS and motor information from the CNS
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS STYSTEM
carries messages between the CNS and internal organs and glands
autonomic nervous system involves
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
prepares the body when we experience strong emotions or feel threatened (fight or flight)
PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
calms and restores the body to normal state (homeostasis)
afferent neurons
brings sensory info from sensory receptors to the brain
efferent neurons
carries signals from the brain to the body. transports info regarding movement
