Dermatophilosis
Caused by Dermatophilus congolensis
Gram +, cocci, filamentous bacteria
Zoonotic
Clinical signs of dermatophilosis
Paint brush lesion
Sheep - lumps bc wool is thick
Moist* gray/pink under crusts, purulent
Locations for dermatophilosis by species
Cattle - udder/scrotum
Goats - ears/under tail
Sheep - coronary band (strawberry foot rot)
Treating dermatophilosis
Remove from environment /wet conditions
Reduce risk of infection by removing external parasites
Treat w penicillin or oxytetracycline
Dermatophytosis
Ring worm
Common in the winter & spring, confined housing
Clinical signs of ring worm
Young animals <1y
Alopecia, scaling, crusting
Cattle head & neck
Sheep common in club lambs
Not common in pigs
Treating ring worm
Remove crust, iodine, chlorhexidine bath, antifungal creams
- iodine, Chlorox, captan, human products
Prevention of ringworm
Limit contact or sharing fomites
Proper housing & diet
Reduce moisture in environment
Control scratching
Papillomatosis
Warts caused by papilloma virus also from trauma to the skin. Common in YA <2y
Clinical signs of papillomatosis
Firm protruding mass w horny dry surface
Penile & teat lesions are pink/fleshy
Single/multiple
Remain for 2-6m & can spontaneously regress
Treating BPV warts
Crush or pinch warts off, surgical to reduce bleeding
Regress on their own
Prevention of BPV warts
Autogenous vaccine
Commercial vaccine
Virus is transferred thru fomites
Reduce etiologies that promote scratching
Orf or Contagious sore mouth
Caused by parapoxvirus
Common in young sheep, goats <6m
Life long infection
EASILY transmitted, zoonotic
Clinical signs of contagious sore mouth
PROLIFERATIVE scabby lesions at mucocutaneous junctions
- mouth, eye, nose, teats, udder, vulva
Oral lesions near teeth
Tx and PV of contagious sore mouth
Antibiotics and analgesics - usually self limiting disease
Vaccination w live virus for prevention
